We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and patient focused person to join our small team. You will be expected to work across the whole theatre pathway including clerking, scrub nursing, anaesthetics and recovery. You will also assist in organising the replenishment and maintenance of stock and equipment within the department.
You will work in line with NMC / AODP code of conduct, and you will understand and follow all local policies and procedures.
General Duties
- Assess, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the peri-operative care of patients using specialist knowledge and skills ensuring all care is person centred and individualised acknowledging personal preferences, legal rights and choice of patients undergoing surgery.
- Maintain health, safety and the control of infection in clinical work areas in line with Northwood Hospital policies and procedures.
- Store, prepare and administer prescribed drugs to patients, and monitor the effects of drugs on patients in line with Northwood Hospital Policies.
- Support, monitor and care for patients during clinical procedures.
- Maintain accurate and legible records of care.
- Assess requirements of the Theatre / anaesthetic room / recovery room for the operating list to ensure that the needs of the patients and clinicians are met, and that clinical practice takes place in a safe environment.
- Provide all necessary equipment and materials for the list.
- Monitor all equipment used, report and take action if found to be faulty to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
- The post holder will deputise for the theatre manager (working within own scope of capability and competence of the unit), providing clinical and operational management advice, including skill mix and safe staffing decisions, and escalates areas of concern.
- Exemplary standards of behaviour will be role modelled and the standards/behaviours/values of the Nursing/Dental/AHP profession in line with NMC/GDC/HCPC code of conduct and trust will be upheld.
- Support the theatre manager with the day-to-day management of the theatre setting, including staff performance and sickness & absence. Staff will be coached, supported appropriately, and signposted to other agencies and areas of concern to be escalated.
- Manage the theatre team to ensure effective & efficient use of theatre time by monitoring productivity and theatre utilisation.
- Ensure the anaesthetic equipment is suitably maintained and fit for purpose, ensuring that all staff are suitably competent and trained to use the equipment where appropriate.
- Contribute new ideas for change to meet patient and staff needs, provide recommendations, and evaluate change.
- Ensure risks are appropriately identified, escalated and managed in accordance with the trust procedures and governance policies and ensure they are investigated within a timely manner.
Governance
- Identify clinical practice problems and offer new ideas to improve standards of care in theatre utilising evidence where appropriate.
- Undertake risk assessments in line with Northwood Hospital policy and feedback to the team where appropriate and ensure COSHH are updated and maintained on a regular basis.
- Contribute to the development of clinical polices / procedures / guidelines / standards of care within the Theatre department utilising expert knowledge and evidenced based theory where appropriate.
- Participate in Clinical Governance activity by attending and participating in the theatre governance meetings. Support with the collection of data for audit presentations and identify areas for improvement within the service and/or theatre setting. Supporting the theatre manager with quality and service improvement initiatives to maximise patient safety.
- To support the theatre manager to identify and report any patient safety concerns and ensure they are investigated within a timely manner utilising the NHSE PSIRF (Patient Safety Incident Response Framework) and escalating as appropriate.

- It is essential to be proficient in reading and writing in the English language. The ability to speak, receive, understand and issue instructions in English and using medical terminology without risk of misunderstanding is also essential.

It is essential to have significant theatre experience and experience in anaesthetics.
Management Skills
- Comply with Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.
- Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.
- Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with lead staff.

Job Purpose
You will provide support and assistance to a Registered Nurse by undertaking a range of assigned administrative and clinical duties, including being responsible for taking patient’s vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturations levels), performing ECGs, swabs and checking urine samples. You will ensure there is continual feedback to the Registered nurse about the patient’s condition.
You will work flexibly across the hospital, on the ward and in the out-patient team, to meet service needs.
You will contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care, ensuring their physical, psychological and social needs are always met and ensuring patient’s privacy and dignity.
Your key responsibilities
Administrative duties will include:-
- Greeting and assisting patients as they arrive
- Maintaining patient records, ensuring data recorded is accurate, legible (if handwritten), recorded in a timely manner, kept up to date and appropriately filed in accordance with data protection policies
- Checking clinical rooms and the outpatient environment are clean and adequately stocked
- Assisting with stock ordering, receipt of deliveries, storing appropriately and replenishing stock within area of work
- Safely dispose of clinical waste as per health and safety policies
- Handling patient and relative enquiries both face-to-face and over the phone effectively, with a focus on high quality customer care.
- Checking the readiness for use of emergency / special equipment, and ensure all equipment in use is in good working order
- Attending all required training, meetings and staff briefings as required during working hours
Clinical Duties will include:-
- Providing a chaperone service for clinicians during patient examinations and procedures, providing comfort and support
- Assisting clinicians with setting up and preparing for procedures
- Supporting a range of clinical services including ECGs, phlebotomy, general observations of vital signs
- Undertaking a variety of manual handling tasks safely and with appropriate training and risk assessments in place, including moving and handling patients safely (e.g helping patients transfer from beds to the operating theatre and back, lifting patients in theatre, helping patients if they have fallen, aiding patients with self-care including transfers from the toilet / commode back to a chair or bed), carrying or moving medical equipment, carrying food and beverages, and collecting deliveries and moving them to the correct storage facility.
- Assisting the patient by undertaking fundamental care tasks, including daily care and personal hygiene, eating and drinking, mobility needs, washing under direct or indirect supervision.

Job Purpose
You will be part of a small team delivering high quality and safe person-centred care across our 8 bedded in-patient unity, and our 6 bedded day case unit. You will work flexibly across the hospital to meet service and patient needs.
