Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. It can be done for aesthetic enhancement, functional improvement, or both. Preservation rhinoplasty focuses on maintaining nasal structure, while revision rhinoplasty corrects or refines previous nose surgery.

Procedure Overview

This surgery is for individuals who are dissatisfied with the appearance or function of their nose. Revision cases are for those who have had previous nasal surgery and are seeking refinement or correction.

Northwood Hospital - Rhinoplasty The Procedure

CONSULTATION

For rhinoplasty, we begin with a detailed, face-to-face discussion between you and your surgeon. You’ll be encouraged to explain the aspects of your nose that concern you, whether these relate to shape, size, symmetry, or breathing. Your surgeon will assess both the internal and external nasal structures, and consider how your nose harmonises with the rest of your facial features. A full medical history will be taken, including any history of nasal injury, breathing issues, or previous surgery. Photographs are often taken, and digital simulation may be used to give an idea of possible changes—although these are intended as guides rather than guarantees. The surgeon will explain the available techniques, such as open or closed rhinoplasty, where incisions may be placed, and what can realistically be achieved given your unique anatomy. This is also the stage to review potential risks, expected recovery time, and the likely benefits, so you can make a confident, informed choice about surgery.

PREOP PREPARATION

Setting aside time to focus on preparation before you attend for surgery is important if you wish a successful outcome. Healthy eating (avoiding refined sugars, and ultra processed foods), reducing alcohol consumption and stopping smoking, vaping or taking recreational drugs is extremely important in the 6 weeks running up to surgery.

If you are unwell for any reason in the run up to surgery it is important to let your team know as occasionally it is safer to postpone any treatment until you are in full health. Please let your surgeon know if you are taking any herbal remedies, or blood thinners such as aspirin during your pre-op assessment as these may need to be stopped before surgery.

SURGERY

Rhinoplasty is usually carried out under general anaesthetic and can take 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. An open approach involves a small incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), giving direct visibility of the nasal framework. In a closed approach, all incisions are hidden inside the nostrils. Bone and cartilage can be reshaped to refine the bridge, adjust the nasal tip, or correct deviations, and in some cases cartilage grafts are added for extra support or contour. Once the desired refinements are complete, the incisions are closed with fine sutures, and a lightweight splint is placed to protect the new shape during the initial healing phase.

RECOVERY

After surgery, it’s normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and a blocked-nose feeling for the first few days. The splint and any external stitches are generally removed after 7–10 days. Many patients feel comfortable returning to office work or light activities within 1–2 weeks, although the nose will continue to refine over several months. Bruising typically resolves within two weeks, but swelling—particularly at the nasal tip—can take up to a year to settle completely. During recovery, you’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and contact sports for at least 4–6 weeks. You should also take care to avoid bumps or pressure on the nose and limit sun exposure to protect the skin and scars. Regular follow-up appointments will ensure your recovery is progressing well and that you’re happy with the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rhinoplasty safe?

Rhinoplasty is a safe and well-established procedure when carried out by an experienced specialist. Like all surgeries, it carries some risks, such as infection, bleeding, and temporary breathing difficulty. Revision rhinoplasty carries slightly higher risks due to altered anatomy or scar tissue.

How long do results last?

The results of rhinoplasty are permanent, although the nose may change slightly over time due to ageing. Revision surgery may be required if complications arise or aesthetic preferences change.

What is the difference between preservation and traditional rhinoplasty?

Preservation rhinoplasty focuses on reshaping the nose without removing or disrupting key structural components, maintaining natural support. Traditional approaches may involve more extensive cartilage removal or grafting.

How long does recovery take?

Initial bruising and swelling usually subside in 2–3 weeks. Subtle swelling may persist for several months, especially around the tip. Final results become fully visible after 6–12 months.

Will I need nasal packing?

Most modern rhinoplasty techniques do not require nasal packing, making the recovery more comfortable.

Can rhinoplasty fix breathing issues?

Yes. If you have a deviated septum or other internal nasal issues, these can be corrected during rhinoplasty, improving both form and function.

Will there be visible scars?

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. Open rhinoplasty has a small incision across the columella, which usually heals very well and is barely visible.
