A brow lift (also known as forehead lift) is a surgical procedure that elevates the eyebrows, smooths forehead lines, and reduces frown lines between the eyebrows. It rejuvenates the upper face by creating a fresher, more open, and youthful appearance.

Procedure Overview

This surgery is for individuals with sagging or low-set eyebrows, deep forehead wrinkles, or vertical frown lines that contribute to a tired, angry, or aged expression. You may also seek a brow lift if non-surgical options no longer achieve the desired effect, or if your brow position is affecting your vision.

CONSULTATION

During the consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your forehead skin, eyebrow position, and hairline to determine the most appropriate brow lift technique. Options include the traditional coronal lift, endoscopic brow lift, or temporal (lateral) lift, each with different incision placements and recovery considerations.

You will discuss your goals in detail, and the surgeon may use imaging or diagrams to show how raising the brow position will affect your overall appearance. They will also consider whether complementary procedures, such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), would enhance your results.

The consultation will also cover pre-surgery preparation, the expected recovery timeline, potential risks, and the type of anaesthesia to be used. Your surgeon will explain the likely scar positions and how they can be hidden within the hairline or natural creases.

PREOP PREPARATION

Setting aside time to focus on preparation before you attend for surgery is important if you wish a successful outcome.  Healthy eating (avoiding refined sugars, and ultra processed foods), reducing alcohol consumption and stopping smoking, vaping or taking recreational drugs is extremely important in the 6 weeks running up to surgery.

If you are unwell for any reason in the run up to surgery it is important to let your team know as occasionally it is safer to postpone any treatment until you are in full health. Please let your surgeon know if you are taking any herbal remedies, or blood thinners such as aspirin during your pre-op assessment as these may need to be stopped before surgery.

SURGERY

Brow lift surgery is performed under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation. Depending on the technique chosen, incisions may be made across the scalp (coronal lift), within the hairline using small incisions and a camera (endoscopic lift), or at the temples for a more targeted lift (temporal lift). The underlying tissues are adjusted, muscles contributing to frown lines may be weakened, and the skin is repositioned for a smoother appearance.

RECOVERY

You may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort for the first week after surgery. Cold compresses and keeping your head elevated can help minimise swelling. Stitches are removed after 7–10 days. Most patients can return to work within 1–2 weeks, though full healing and settling of results may take several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is brow lift surgery safe?

Brow lift surgery is considered safe when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. Like all surgeries, it carries some risk, including bleeding, infection, scarring, and temporary numbness. Complications are rare, and most patients recover well. Your surgeon will discuss all relevant risks during your consultation.

Will the results look natural?

Modern brow lift techniques aim for a natural, refreshed appearance. The position of the brows is subtly elevated to reduce heaviness and smooth frown lines without giving a ‘surprised’ look.

How long do results last?

The effects of a brow lift generally last between 7 and 10 years, though this varies depending on age, lifestyle, and skin condition. Ageing will continue, but the improvement from surgery remains visible.

Will there be visible scars?

Scars are typically hidden within the hairline or along natural skin creases. Once healed, they are barely noticeable and can be easily concealed by hair.

What is the recovery like?

Some swelling and bruising are normal, especially around the eyes and forehead. These usually subside within 1–2 weeks. Most patients report minimal pain and return to work within a week.

When can I return to normal activities?

Desk work can usually be resumed within a week. Exercise and heavier activity should be avoided for 3–4 weeks. Your surgeon will provide tailored guidance based on your healing progress.

Does the surgery require an overnight stay?

A brow lift is almost always performed as a day-case procedure, and you’ll be able to go home the same day with appropriate aftercare instructions.

Can a brow lift be combined with other procedures?

Yes. It is commonly performed alongside eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or facelift to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
